“‘Homo’ is still the most used curse word in Dutch. We have a growing immigrant culture with intolerant views about homosexuality. That’s dangerous. I think the government should take homosexuality and diversity more seriously. They should require schools to teach about homosexuality, whether they like it or not. I think it’s really important for young people to be aware that homosexuality exists, that it doesn’t have to be a problem, and that you can love someone else. Homosexuality remains talked about openly at some schools and in other schools, teachers don’t dare touch the subject. I have a degree in teaching primary school and I think people would have different attitudes toward gay people if they learned about it at a young age in school. I think all people are at their best when they have solidarity.”
