“I’ve never known what it feels like to be born and raised in one country or to call one country home. To me, home is any place where you can be yourself. Where you have family and friends who love you unconditionally. For me, it is Suriname, Curacao and the Netherlands. If I’m in one country, I’m always missing the other two. A couple of years ago I wanted to show my boyfriend Harry where I grew up and where my family is from. We went to Curacao and Suriname. When we visited my family there, I told them that Harry was my partner. They accepted it, but no one talks about it easily. People are curious and they seem interested to know more. I think now I could be openly gay in all three places. It’s more accepted these days.”
